Hugo Díaz de la Paz (born March 1, 1953 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ) is a retired Mexican football player on the position of a striker .

Life

Díaz played for almost his entire football career at his hometown club Club Deportivo Guadalajara , where he was under contract from 1972 to 1982 in the era of the "Chivas flacas" when the team between 1970 and 1987 did not win a single title.

On the way to the away game in Puebla , which was scheduled for the following day, the team bus from Chivas got into a traffic accident on February 14, 1981, in which several players were injured. The fact that Díaz survived this accident is partly due to the fact that he swapped his intended seat that day with his teammate and friend José Martínez González , who was killed in the accident.

During his time at Chivas Díaz completed a total of four international appearances for the Mexican national football team from 1974 to 1979 , none of which was lost.

Díaz spent his last season in 1982/83 in the service of Deportivo Neza .

From 1994 to 2004 Díaz de la Paz worked as a junior coach for his long-term club Chivas and in this capacity also looked after the later national players Chicharito and Marco Fabián , who played for Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga . He then worked as a talent scout for Chivas from 2005 to 2018.
