José Martínez González (born May 29, 1953 in Santa Cruz del Astillero, El Arenal , Jalisco ; † February 14, 1981 in Puebla ), also known by his first name by the nickname Pepe and also known by the nickname Mudo ( span . for Der Schweigsame ), was a Mexican soccer player who mostly played in attacking midfield .

Life

Martínez began his football career at Club Deportivo Guadalajara , in whose youth department he was accepted in 1967. In 1970 he got a professional contract with Chivas and played his whole life exclusively for this club.

An unforgettable highlight of his career was the friendly game played on November 11, 1980 in Los Angeles against the Argentinos Juniors with Diego Maradona . Martínez played one of his best games that day and scored the winning goal to make it 1-0.

On the way to the away game in Puebla , which was scheduled for the following day, the Chivas team bus got into a traffic accident on February 14, 1981, in which several players were injured and Pepe Martínez lost his life after he had previously taken his seat with his Teammate Hugo Díaz de la Paz had swapped.

Since then, the jersey he wears with the number 22 has not been awarded at Chivas, except for the rare appearances in the Copa Libertadores , where the regulations of the Conmebol require it.
