Hugo Günther

Hugo Günther (born November 24, 1891 in Bad Berka ; † December 4, 1954 ) was a German party functionary ( SPD / KPD / KPO / SED ) and insurance director .

Life

Günther graduated after attending the elementary school an apprenticeship as a heating engineer . In 1914 he joined the union . In 1917 he became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and in 1919 switched to the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). In Weimar he became political leader of the subdistrict there. In the internal party disputes in 1928/29, he was expelled from the KPD with the entire local group in Weimar and formed the local Communist Party Opposition (KPO) with his comrades .

After the NSDAP came to power , he was taken into “ protective custody ” and imprisoned from March 1935 to 1937 in the penitentiaries of Gräfentonna and Halle . He was arrested again in August 1944, when the Schumann-Engert-Kresse group was broken up as part of the " Operation Grid " . He was imprisoned in the Gestapo in Weimar and in the Ichtershausen state prison .

With the liberation from National Socialism in April 1945, he became a member of the KPD district leadership in Thuringia , but from 1946 only played a subordinate role in the party hierarchy . From 1947 he was the administrative director of the social security institute Weimar and a local SED functionary.
