Hugo I. (Zeitz)
Hugo I. von Zeitz († August 29, 979 in Zeitz ) was the first bishop of the Zeitz diocese .
Life
After the Synod of Ravenna in 967, by Pope John XIII. was convened, it was decided to found the Archbishopric Magdeburg , which happened in 968. This archbishopric was divided into the dioceses of Meißen , Merseburg , Brandenburg , Havelberg and Zeitz. Thereupon, on Christmas Day 968, the Benedictine monk Hugo was consecrated in Magdeburg by Archbishop Adelbert as the first Zeitz bishop. His alleged Dutch descent comes from the Taubesche Chronik of the history forger Johann Georg Rauhe . For his diocese he received the towns of Zeitz and Altenburg as well as another 26 villages. He was considered a friend and advocate of the poor who was seen as the ideal church father.
His tenure in office was not quiet in the founding phase. As early as 976/977 he was expelled from his area of office by a Bohemian army under the leadership of Count Dedo I of Wettin . Together with Duke Heinrich II of Bavaria, he had rebelled against Emperor Otto II . With the attack, Dedo wanted to prevent his mother, who owned lands in the diocese, from transferring them to the diocese. After Dedo I withdrew from Zeitz after its looting, he took his mother with him as a prisoner of war. Hugo I died soon afterwards, presumably returning to Zeitz on August 29, 979. He found his resting place in Zeitz Cathedral . A memorial stone for the first bishop of the diocese is located in the Zeitz castle church. This was donated years later by the cathedral chapter to emphasize the importance of Zeitz for the diocese.
