from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dedo I. , Count of Wettin (* around 960 ; † November 13, 1009 ) was a son of Dietrich from the Saxon noble family of Wettin . His brother was Count Friedrich von Eilenburg .

Life

The young Dedo spent his childhood with his relative, Margrave Rikdag , Lord of the Mark Meißen , Mark Zeitz and Mark Merseburg , and was thus closely related to one of the most influential men in East Saxony . Dedo was married to Thietburga, the daughter of Margrave Dietrich von Haldensleben , master of the Nordmark , which he had married before 985.

In the years from 974 to 985 Dedo I was involved in the rebellion of the Bavarian Duke Heinrich of Bavaria against Emperor Otto II and later also against his son Otto III. involved, to which the Bavarian duke finally submitted in June 985 in Frankfurt. In 976 Dedo commanded a Bohemian army that took Zeitz and robbed the episcopal church. The Wettiner allegedly took his own mother away as a prisoner with the booty.

Dedo obviously had a good relationship with the Magdeburg Archbishop Giselher . After the death of Count Binizo, this gave him the count's rights in northern Hassegau . In addition, Dedo successfully claimed the Burgward Zörbig for himself and his brother Friedrich.

The years before Dedo's death were ultimately overshadowed by a feud with the Walbeckers , the cause of which is unknown. As the husband of the daughter of the Margrave von der Nordmark, Dedo claimed the office for himself after his death, which was given to Lothar from Walbeck. Lothar ruled the Nordmark from 983 to 1003. Bishop Thietmar von Merseburg , a nephew of Lothar, tells in his chronicle that Dedo I participated in the devastation of Wolmirstedt Castle , which was owned by Walbeck. The Wettiner was also in dispute with Margrave Lothar's son and successor Werner von Walbeck (1003–1009; † 1014). Dedo was killed on November 13th, 1009 together with his vassal Egilhard by his adversary Werner near Mose at the confluence of the Tangier and Elbe rivers.

Count Dedo left a son:

Dietrich II , Count of Wettin, from 1031 Margrave of the Lausitz region (* around 990; † 1034).
