Hugo thunderstorm
Hugo Ungewitter (born February 13, 1869 in Haus Kappel near Wiedenbrück , † March 23, 1947 ) was a German animal and battle painter.
Life
Hugo Ungewitter, like his ancestors, had lived in Osnabrück since 1876 and attended the Ratsgymnasium there . From 1887 he attended the Royal Prussian Art Academy in Düsseldorf . On behalf of the Düsseldorf Academy, he painted historical pictures for the Grafenhof in Stotel in 1897 . He was then commissioned by the Berlin court to paint the later famous picture of Blucher crossing the Rhine near Kaub . In October 1905 the resident of Kaiserwall in Osnabrück exhibited for the first time.
From 1906 he lived in Berlin when he was not traveling . This is where battle scenes such as Waterloo , Langensalza and Simferopol were created .
The Berlin court appointed Hugo Ungewitter professor in 1913.
Ungewitter is best known for its realistic depictions of nature and animals as well as for its depiction of military and hunting scenes. He found many motifs for this in South America and eastern Russia.
At the beginning of April 1918 Professor Ungewitter was a guest of the Lübeck Regiment in Houthem in Flanders for study purposes . In honor of the war painter , one of their companies was given the code name Ungewitter .
In 1924 he traveled to Abyssinia for study purposes . In the monthly issues of Velhagen and Klasings he reported in 1926 with illustrations and travel sketches in: As a painter in Abyssinia .
The painting Butterwiese (1900) hung in the Osnabrück Museum until the end of the last war . The landscape around the Schützenhof bar came from the painter Rudolf Lichtenberg, the figures skating together, well-known Osnabrück residents, citizens and officers from Ungewitter. It has been lost since then.
After 1920, his art could no longer be assigned to any modern trend.
His paintings have been sold for up to $ 35,000 at auctions in recent years. Most of these were oil paintings. In addition to depictions of animals and slaughter, hunting and sports scenes have also been preserved.

Individual evidence
- ^ According to Hermann Alexander Müller: General Artist Lexicon. Volume 2, Rütten & Loening, 1906, p. 275, the date of birth is February 18. The date of death cannot be determined in the literature. Around 1944 was mentioned once in an unconfirmed footnote . But since this has not been confirmed anywhere, it could also be a misprint. 1944 is only an unconfirmed rumor and therefore not usable as a fact for the time being.
