Hugo Valentin (historian)

Hugo Mauritz Valentin (born October 4, 1888 in Östergötland County ; † May 7, 1963 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish historian.

biography

Valentin completed his studies in history at Uppsala University in 1916 with a dissertation on the knight's house in the frihetstiden . He then worked as a teacher in Falun and Uppsala. In 1930 he received the academic title of docent from his alma mater , and in 1948 the Swedish government awarded him the honorary title of professor .

Valentin's main academic focus was on 18th-century (especially Swedish) history and Judaism . For the first time he achieved greater fame with his comprehensive history of the Jews in Sweden ( Judarnas historia i Sverige ) published in 1924 . In the 30s and 40s, Valentin devoted himself more and more to contemporary history topics. In particular, his work Antisemitism i historisk och kritisk belysning (published in German in 1937 under the title “Antisemitenspiegel: der Antisemitismus - history, criticism, sociology”), which has been translated into several languages, was received internationally . In October 1942, he made the Holocaust known to the general public in Sweden in a well-documented newspaper article .

Uppsala University has been running the Hugo Valentin Center since 2009 , which is dedicated to the investigation of ethnically determined phenomena and processes as well as Holocaust and genocide research .
