The table tennis Europe Top 16 Cup 2016 took place from February 5th to 7th in Gondomar , Portugal . The defending champions were Dimitrij Ovtcharov for men and Liu Jia for women . Gold went to Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Shen Yanfei .

qualification

The reigning individual European champions Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Elizabeta Samara were qualified, as were the top 14 European players in the world rankings of December 2015 (without taking into account the European champions). If there was no player from the host Portugal among these 15 players, they were allowed to name another participant, otherwise the last place was also awarded via the world rankings. An association was allowed to be represented by a maximum of four players.

The 16 participants were divided into 4 groups, in which everyone played against everyone. The group first and second qualified for the quarter-finals. Places 1–8 were played out, the top three automatically qualified for the World Cup . In the group phase, each individual was played in the best-of-five mode and thus consisted of three to five sets; from the quarter-finals onwards, the best-of-seven mode was used.
