Hugo of Crécy
Hugo von Crécy (French: Hugues de Crécy ; † after 1118) was a Seneschal of France from the House of Montlhéry . He was lord of Crécy-en-Brie and Gournay-sur-Marne , and castellan of Gometz and Châteaufort .
He was a son of Count Guido "des Roten" von Rochefort († 1108) and Adelheid von Crécy, his sister was Lucienne von Rochefort , the first wife of King Louis VI. of France . His family exercised the greatest influence on the royal court at the time, by occupying the office of royal seneschal. Hugo inherited the Lords of Crécy and Gournay from his mother and the castellans of Gometz and Châteaufort from his father.
Around the year 1106/07 Hugo took over the office of seneschal from his father, but at the same time King Ludwig VI was looking. to free himself from the dominance of Montlhéry and divorced Lucienne. This drove the clan and their extensive family members of the Île-de-France to revolt against the king. He transferred the seneschallate to Anseau de Garlande , Hugo's brother-in-law, who was loyal to him , and conquered Gournay Castle with him. Hugo then attacked his half-brother, Count Odo II of Corbeil , because he had not supported him in the defense of Gournay. He took the half-brother prisoner and locked him in a dungeon at the castle of La Ferté-Baudouin (now La Ferté-Alais ). But already in December 1108 Garlande moved against La Ferté-Baudouin and freed the count after a fight. Hugo's father died that same year, whereupon he and his cousin Hugo III. von Le Puiset became one of the leading figures in the revolt against the king.
He turned against another loyal cousin, Milon II of Montlhéry , whose land he devastated. Eventually he conquered Montlhéry Castle by treason and took Milon prisoner. After the Chronicon Mauriniacensis, he imprisoned his cousin in Châteaufort and later strangled him with his own hands, probably around 1118.
But ultimately the uprising in 1118 was suppressed by the king with the conquest of Le Puiset and Hugo's enclosure in Gometz Castle. Hugo had to give up all his possessions and retire to Cluny Abbey as a monk .
