Hugo von Reiche (born March 12, 1839 in Hanover , † December 26, 1883 in Aachen ) was a German mechanical engineer and university professor.

Life

Hugo von Reiche studied mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic School in Hanover and at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe . In Hanover in 1857 he became a member of the Slesvico-Holsatia Landsmannschaft, later the Slesvico-Holsatia Corps . After completing his studies, worked as an engineer, namely as a smelter in Jedlicze at the Silesian Actiengesellschaft für Bergbau und Zinkhüttenbetrieb and as a senior engineer at the Saxon-Anhalt Steam Boiler Revision Association. During this time he was already publishing on machine manufacturing and the installation and operation of steam boilers.

In 1874 he was appointed as the successor to Leonidas Lewicki , who had accepted a position at the Dresden Polytechnic , as head of the technical college for mechanical engineering and mechanical technology at the Aachen Polytechnic . Like Lewicki, his specialty was steam engine construction . In 1880 he took over the management of an examination committee for the scientific investigation of the efficiency of the steam engines exhibited at the Düsseldorf trade fair in 1880. This investigation marked a milestone in the transformation of the Polytechnic School in Aachen with only descriptive communication of technical content to a technical university with its own technical expertise based on scientific research.
