Hugues Krafft (* 1853 in Paris ; † 1935 ) was a French photographer.

Life

Krafft was born in Paris in 1853 to Guillaume and Emma Krafft. Emma Krafft came from the family of Peter Arnold Mumm , Guillaume Krafft was a partner in Louis Roederer's champagne cellar from 1845 . Hugues Krafft had a brother named Hermann and a younger sister named Félicie. Krafft spent his childhood in Reims and near Frankfurt am Main . After the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, Hugues Krafft was sent to England to learn the English language at Eton College . At the age of 22, Krafft was introduced to Roederer by his father and subsequently worked in the champagne cellars. Two years later the father died and Krafft stopped working in the cellars. He moved to Paris and devoted himself to art there. After his mother's death in 1880, Krafft began planning a trip around the world. He set out in October 1881 and reached Yokohama at the end of August 1882 . From this time he left numerous photographs. With the use of silver bromide photo plates, a gelatin process that was introduced in the 1880s, he is one of the pioneers of this recording technique, which enabled him to take lifelike snapshots outdoors in Japan. This clearly set it apart from its predecessors, whose recordings were made in the studio. Krafft worked with a Zeiss camera .
