Louis Roederer (born April 6, 1809 in Strasbourg , † May 18, 1870 in Souilly ) was a wine merchant and as such one of the most important of the 19th century. He gave his name to one of the largest champagne houses: Champagne Louis Roederer .

biography

He got into the wine shop of his uncle Nicolas Henri Schreider, whose sister Sophie was married to Louis' father Geoffroy Louis Roederer (1780-1822). Nicolas Henri Schreider took over the company, founded in 1760, from Dubois Pere & Fils (Dubois & Son). After Schreider's death it ran under the sole direction and the name Roederers, who bequeathed it to his son Louis II (1846-1880) in 1870. He significantly advanced the marketing of Champagne wines and, with his company, Champagne Louis Roederer , expanded exports to Russia in particular .

In addition to his entrepreneurial activity, he sat in the Conseil général (General Council of the Department) and lived on a large scale. He was a distant relative of the Metz- born Pierre-Louis Roederer . Louis Roederer's wife Louise Félicie Bechet de Balan (June 30, 1817-20 July 1854) was a niece of Marguerite Clémence Jobert (1799-1825). She was the first wife of Georg Christian Kessler , the founder of the first German sparkling wine cellar.

Cristal Roederer

Today Cristal Roederer is the brand of one of the largest independent champagne cellars : Champagne Louis Roederer . However, this brand was only created in 1876, about six years after his death.

Cristal Roederer is one of the more expensive champagne brands.
