Champagne Louis Roederer is a champagne house from Reims . It was founded in 1776 and has been family-owned since 1819. It is one of the last independent champagne houses. Roederer produces 3 million bottles a year, including the famous Cristal , and sells its wines in 80 countries.

Louis Roederer also owns other wineries such as the Deutz champagne house , the Maison Delas in the Rhone Valley , the Domaine Ott in Provence , the Châteaux de Pez and Haut-Beauséjour ( Saint-Estèphe ) in Bordeaux and, since January 2007, the Château Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse de Lalande ( Pauillac ). Outside France, too, the champagne house has wineries in several countries, such as Roederer Estate and Scharffenberger in California , the USA and Ramos Pinto in Portugal .

history

The champagne house was founded in Reims in 1776 by Messrs. Dubois, father and son. They then sold the house to Nicolas Schreider, Louis Roederer's uncle . In 1827 Nicolas Schreider started working with his nephew. And six years later, Louis Roederer inherited the family champagne house from his uncle. From this date (1833) the winery is called "Champagne Louis Roederer". In the following years, Louis Roederer developed the champagne house and bought grapevines to become independent.

The wines

Wines without vintage

Brut Premier

The Brut Premier consists of the three permitted grape varieties for champagne : 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier. It combines the wines of the three grape varieties of Champagne, matured in oak barrels , which come from more than 50 different crus. It matures for 3 years in the cellar and a further 6 months after dégorgement . Like the majority of champagnes, it comes from several vintages.

Carte Blanche

Like the Brut Premier, the Cuvée Carte Blanche consists of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier. The difference is 5% wine aged in oak barrels. The cuvée matures for 3 years in the cellar and rests for another 6 months after the dégorgement.

Vintage wines

Brut vintage

The Brut Vintage is made from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, 30% of which are oak-aged wines without malolactic fermentation . The Pinot Noir comes mainly from the Reims mountains . It is stored in the cellar for an average of 4 years and a further 6 months after the dégorgement.

Brut rosé

The Brut Rosé is made from 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay. The proportion of wines matured in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation is 20%. The Cuvée Brut Rosé matures on average 4 years in the wine cellar, 8 more months after the dégorgement. The Chardonnay comes from Cumières in the Marne valley .

Blanc de blancs

A Blanc de Blancs is a champagne made exclusively from white grape varieties. The Cuvée Blanc de Blancs is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, matures an average of 5 years in the cellar and 6 more months after the dégorgement. The Chardonnay comes from two special Grand Crus: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Avize . The dosage is adjusted for each vintage and is 8-10 g / l. This means that the Blanc de Blancs is a "Champagne Brut".

Cuvée de Prestige

Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne

Cristal

Cristal is the first cuvée de prestige of a champagne, which is why crystal is the most famous wine of the house today. It was created for Tsar Alexander II in 1876 . He had a particular fondness for Louis Roederer's wines and commissioned him to reserve the best cuvée for him every year. Emphasizing its uniqueness, this champagne is filled in a crystal bottle with a flat bottom, hence the name.

Cristal is only produced in those "great years" when the Chardonnay (40%) and the Pinot Noir (60%) reach perfect maturity. It is then stored in the cellar for 6 years and rests for another 8 months after the dégorgement.

Cristal rose

A hundred years after Cristal, Cristal Rosé was added. Cristal Rosé is made using the Saignée method after cold maceration to 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, with a share of 20% wines aged in oak barrels. It matures in the cellar for an average of 6 years. The Pinot Noir comes from the growing areas of the Grand Cru d'Aÿ .
