Skrew is an American industrial metal band from Austin , Texas , that was formed in 1991, disbanded in 1998 and has been active again since 2009.
history
The band was founded in 1991 by singer and guitarist Adam Grossman and guitarist Danny "Opossum" Lohner . Both were previously active in the band Angkor Wat , with Grossman using the pseudonym "King Binnie" and Lohner "Edith Bunker". In May 1992 the debut album Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame, named after a Charles Bukowski poem, was released via Devotion Records , the recording being produced by Phil Owen ( Revolting Cocks ). The album was recorded by Angkor Wat back in 1990. Since this material was too different from the previous material due to the electronic influences, some members decided to form a new band: Skrew. The K in the band name stands for the hardness of the music, which a C could not have expressed to the same extent. Al Jourgensen , who discovered the band, can be heard on the recording as a guest musician . After guitarist Doug Shappuis, bassist Brandon Workman, keyboardist Jim Vollentine and drummer Mark Dufour joined the band, they went on tour. They also played in December as a replacement for the originally announced band Mucky Pup at the two X-Mas festivals in Cologne and Munich . Then came as the new bassist Kyle Sanders to the cast, after which the album Dusted was released in May 1994 . Lohner then left the band to join Nine Inch Nails . In a Metal Hammer interview, Grossmann later stated that Lohner was a big fan of Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails, which would have put Skrew in danger of being a copy of these bands, which is why Lohner's departure was positive. After the album was released, Skrew embarked on his first European tour, playing in the opening act for The Organization and also performing at Dynamo Open Air in 1994 . The third album, Shadow of Doubt , was released on Metal Blade Records in 1996 , on which ex- Overkill guitarist Bobby Gustafson can be heard, who was stuck in El Paso at the time of recording because of a missed connecting flight. Through the album, the band was nominated for a Grammy Award . After the release, Skrew first went on a six-week US tour as the opening act for Kreator in March / April, then went on a European tour with Sacred Reich and performed again at Dynamo Open Air in 1996. The fourth album Angel Seed XXIII was produced by Bill Metoyer and was released in September 1997. In the same year the guitarist and singer Robb Lampman and the bassist Chadwick Davies left the band, whereupon the band split up in 1998. In 2009 Grossmann reformed the band with a completely new line-up.
style
According to Jason Anderson of Allmusic , the band was important for the development of industrial metal and stylistically comparable to bands like Nine Inch Nails and White Zombie . The songs are a combination of metal - riffs and innovative programming . On Angel Seed XXIII , Nu-Metal influences were increasingly incorporated. According to Holger Stratmann in his Rock Hard Encyclopedia , the band still at the time of her debut was Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame with Ministry been compared before the band from Dusted have developed their own style. On Shadow of Doubt , the band moved a bit away from industrial metal, with the vocals sounding more natural and less distorted. Sub Line magazine described the debut as a condensation of dominant computer beats , an electric guitar wall and aggressive vocals into an "apocalyptic sound inferno". The Music Week tried in Dusted -Vorstellung two terms, namely cyberpunk and industrial metal. “Double guitar riff attacks” and “stoically whipping drums”, underlaid with “disturbing samples”, made Dusted even more “brutal” than his predecessor. Im bang! Grossmann stated that there were fewer samples this time. This would make the songs “much straighter”. According to Markus Kavka from Metal Hammer , the band played aggressive industrial metal on Dusted and could hold their own alongside Ministry. On the album you can hear "[b] ear guitars, plastered basses and pounding drums". In the Metal-Hammer interview, Grossmann stated that they tried harder to write groove- oriented songs on Dusted . According to Kavka, the music on Shadow of Doubt had lost its bite and, in contrast to its predecessors, there would be no real hit on the record. The songwriting also does not come close to that of scene greats such as Al Jourgensen, Rob Zombie and Trent Reznor . According to Martin Popoff , the band played some monotonous industrial metal on Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame . The songs sounded like a metal band were writing songs in which the instruments had been replaced by machines. On Dusted , the band reminds me of Ministry in places, with Skrew being one of the better bands in the industrial metal genre. Heavy guitar sounds dominated over industrial sounds in the songs , which reminds me of a serious form of White Zombie. Popoff also used a white-zombie comparison for Shadow of Doubt , although the band occasionally sounded like Nine Inch Nails. Lyrically the band is rough and cynical , which reminds of pitch shifters and well-known death metal bands. Angel Seed XXIII offers industrial metal that sounds like it came from the early 1990s. Many songs would be the same and hardly vary in speed. The singing has a mechanical sound.
