Sub Line was a German-language music magazine from Gelsenkirchen-Buer , which focused on the alternative and independent scene. The magazine was linked to the Sub Terranean record label , which made a name for itself through publications in the areas of Wave , Goth , Synthpop , EBM , Electro , IDM , Techno and Trance . In 1995 the Sub Line became the music magazine Neurostyle .

The magazine was launched in early 1992. The first two issues from February and April 1992 appeared as free reading samples with 16 pages each. From issue 3, which was published in May 1992, the Sub Line was available for the first time as a 64-page music magazine at the kiosk. The Wiesbadener Verlagsunion (VPM) took over the international distribution. The magazine was thus available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. After two further editions came onto the market every two months, the Sub Line was published monthly from the November 1992 edition.
The chief editor remained variable. Jörg Wickermann and Sascha Greinke initially filled this position, subsequently supplemented by Marcel Anders. Charly Rinne, Benno Limberg and Mike Litt then took on this task.
Well-known employees of the magazine were a. Martin von Arndt ( Printed at Bismarck's Death ), Manfred Thomaser (The Disorder, Distain!), Oswald Henke ( Goethes Erben ), Michael Zöller ( incident ), Thomas Thyssen (Pagan Love Songs), Joe Asmodo, Stefan Herwig (Off Beat) , Thorsten Stroht (Off Beat, The Klinik ), Michael Krumbein ( Intro Magazin ), Bernhard Klumb ( Forthcoming Fire ), Matthias van den Nieuwendijk (DJ Mat Mushroom, Mushroom Magazine), Joel Amaretto and Oliver Klemm as well as the two photographers Katja Ruge and Katharina Coen. Some contributors were initially or on the side active for the Zillo magazine, which had a similar content , and the sub line was temporarily counted among its competition.
In 1995 work on the magazine was stopped. Since then, many of the employees have been working on the sub-line branch Neurostyle (from 1998 "Nova Files"), which put its main focus on electro, wave and crossover.

In terms of content, the Sub Line was dedicated to the entire alternative spectrum of the 1990s, including the areas of Noise Pop , Indie Rock , Madchester , Grunge , Britpop , Punk , Gothic Rock , Dark Wave , EBM , Industrial Rock , IDM , Electronica , Techno and Hip -Hop .
In addition to a news section, interviews, short portraits, individual concert and festival reports, numerous CD and record reviews, tour dates and a classifieds section, the magazine had a page titled Into the Future for newcomer bands, the mostly double-sided scene check with club presentations within Germany, as well as two separate news sections that contained brief information on current events in German ( German Underground ) and British ( London Calling ) alternative / independent culture. Furthermore, the Sub Line presented various specials on trends, labels and compilations, such as grunge and the record company Sub Pop , Surf-Punk, Heavenly Voices , Dark Wave and Gothic in Germany ( Godfathers of German Goth ), Industrial Metal, CD Series Pop & Wave (The Sound of the 80s) or label reports on Flying Nun and Warp Records .
Sub Terranean
In the spring of 1993 Sub Line founded the Sub Terranean record company, which was responsible for the successful sampler series We Came to Dance . A total of twelve compilations were published under this title by 1999. Further sampler series were Undercover , Wave Romantics , Godfathers of German Gothic , Call of the Banshee , Touched by the Hand of Goth , Moonraker , Dream Injection and Miroque . The record company continued to run until 2002 after the sub-line music magazine was discontinued and was also able to make a name for itself in the techno / trance scene.
