Hui Dong

Hui Dong ( 惠棟  /  惠栋 , Huì Dòng , Hui Tung ; 1697 - 1758 ) was a Confucian scholar and philologist. He was one of the founders of the Wu School during the Qing Dynasty. Hui Dong was from Wu County, Jiangsu Province . He was born into a family of scholars. He studied among his father's disciples, read extensively, and became well acquainted with the Confucian classical scriptures. He failed the official exams and from then on taught almost his entire life as a private scholar. Hui developed the theories of the Hanxue school further, he adhered closely to a philological or textual study of the classics. He created a number of works of enduring importance. His main works include Zhouyi shu周易 述 ( Notes on the Book of Changes (the Zhou) ), Guwen Shangshu kao古文 尚书 考 ( Investigations into the Old Text Version of the Book of History ) and Jiujing guyi九 经 古 义 ( Original meaning of the Nine Classics : Zhouyi周易, Shangshu 尚书, Maoshi 毛诗, Zhouli 周礼, Yili 仪礼, Liji 礼记, Zuozhuan 左传, Gongyang zhuan 公羊 传, Guliang zhuan 谷梁 传, Lunyu 论语).
