The Huites Dam ( Presa Huites in Spanish or Presa Luis Donaldo Colosio ) was built between 1992 and 1995 north of Los Mochis on the Río Fuerte in Sinaloa , Mexico . Construction work lasted only 29 months, despite controversies surrounding the construction.
The water reservoir has more than doubled the irrigable agricultural area in the Fuerte Valley below the dam. In addition, a modern hydropower plant was built and flood protection improved. In the past there have been occasional floods due to heavy rainfall, hurricanes and snowmelt in the Sierra Madre Occidental .
Half of the construction costs were borne by private investors.
14 smaller villages had to be relocated, one of which was Huites, after which the reservoir is unofficially named. About 200 families with 1,300 people received replacements for their houses. Today they settle in the area around Choix, southwest of the dam. Trees only had to be felled at the construction site. The old buildings were left standing and reappear when the water level changes. You can also see the remains of 350 small haciendas that had to be abandoned.
The reservoir is about 160 km from the town of Los Mochis. This is the nearest major city with an airport. It takes three hours to drive from the airport to the Sierra Madre foothills. For private planes, there is an asphalt runway in El Fuerte, which is only 1.5 hours away from the holiday homes on the reservoir. There are various recreational opportunities at the Huites Reservoir, served by the nearby towns of Mezquite Caido, Choix and the city of El Fuerte.
When fully filled, the reservoir covers 93 km². At the deepest point on the dam, it is 150 m deep. Many fish have been released that have reproduced rapidly. The reservoir is therefore very rich in fish. The species that occur are: carp 40%, catfish 6%, tilapia 40%, real perch 14%.
