Huk (topography)

A Huk referred topographical sense a corner or an edge, especially in the course of a coast ( Low German Huk = "hook", see. Engl. Hook here, "a reaching into the sea promontory"; cf. niederländ.. Hoek [pronunciation as in German and English]).

The term is mainly used in northern Germany and can also be found in the language of sailors .

It is also part of proper names, with which corresponding formations are characterized; So there is the Hohe Wieschendorfer Huk , the Stülper Huk , the Tarnewitzer Huk and the Jäckelberg-Huk in the Wismar Bay . Huk is synonymous with Afrikaans and Dutch Hoek ( angle , corner ), which z. B. in Windhoek (capital of Namibia ) and in Hoek van Holland .
