Hukeng ( Chinese 湖 坑镇 , Pinyin Húkēng zhèn ) is a large community in the southeast of the People's Republic of China . It belongs to the administrative area of the Yongding District , which in turn is subordinate to the prefecture-level City of Longyan in Fujian Province . The Hukeng community administers an area of 96.5 square kilometers with 1500 hectares of agricultural land and a total population of 25,000 people in 2015. The 2000 population census showed a total population of 17,699 people in 5,130 households, of which 8,770 men and 8,929 women.
Hukeng is divided into 16 villages at the village level : Hukeng (湖 坑村), Xipian (西 片 村), Xinjie (新 街村), Wuhuang (五 黄村), Liulian (六 联 村), Hongkeng (洪 坑村), Louxia (楼下 村), Wuwu (吴 屋村), Aoyao (奥 杳 村), Shanxia (山下 村), Yangduo (洋 多 村), Xinnan (新 南村), Nanzhong (南中 村), Nanjiang (南 江村), Shijia (实 佳 村), Wuyin (吴银 村). These include 166 village settlements.
Hukeng is the location of 1556 Tulou , 83 of which are circular in shape and most of which were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties . Since 2008, nine of these buildings have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
