Humanists UK
Humanists UK , until May 2017 the British Humanist Association (BHA), is a British association for the promotion of humanism . It is committed to secularization , human rights , democracy , equality and mutual respect. It is a member of the International Humanist and Ethical Union and the European Humanist Federation . The official symbol is the happy human .
The BHA was founded in 1896 by Stanton Coit as the Union of Ethical Societies . She supports Darwin Day and advocates humanistic names for children. Jim Al-Khalili has been President of the BHA since December 2012 , until then Polly Toynbee , who was elected in 2007, held this position.
In 2008/2009, the BHA and the Richard Dawkins Foundation supported the British Atheist Bus Campaign . The latter was based on an idea by the author Ariane Sherine , who opposed the multitude of religious advertising campaigns. For a few weeks, advertising space was booked on London buses with the lines “There's probably no god. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life. " ("There is probably no God. So don't worry and enjoy your life.") To be clearly visible in public.
In 2010/2011 a new “public awareness” campaign is on the BHA's agenda: the Census Campaign . It tries to educate people about the fact that many non-practicing Christians and non-religious people habitually indicate "Christian" when it comes to the census question about religion, even though it is actually incorrect. With the British humor testifying slogan "If you are not religious for god's sake say so!" ("If you are not religious, say it for God's sake!"), The citizens should be made aware that a thoughtless, wrong answer has political consequences, for example in the distribution of taxpayers' money. With reference to the British Social Attitudes Survey , it is estimated that only half of the actual number of non-believers is correctly reflected in the census.
