Polly Toynbee (originally Mary Louisa T .; born December 27, 1946 on the Isle of Wight ) is a British journalist and civil rights activist . She has been President of the British Humanist Association since July 2007 .

Life

Toynbee is the daughter of literary critic Philip Toynbee and granddaughter of historian Arnold J. Toynbee . She is also related to the economic historian Arnold Toynbee . She worked for The Guardian as a columnist and for the BBC for many years . She also worked for other well-known media. It is considered social democratic and is politically active. Toynbee is a committed advocate of atheism and is affiliated with the National Secular Society and the Humanist Society of Scotland . She criticizes Christianity, Islam and Judaism alike for their “disgust” towards women's rights. She was also critical of the Buddhist Soka Gakkai and its president Daisaku Ikeda . She is also a critic of the British monarchy. She was married to Peter Jenkins and is currently dating David Walker. She was awarded a degree in recognition of her merit by the University of Kent on November 22, 2007 in Canterbury Cathedral . The award ceremony took place during the general graduation ceremony.
