Business district in Humen

Humen ( Chinese  虎門 鎮  /  虎门 镇 , Pinyin Hǔmén Zhèn , Jyutping Fu 2 mun 4 Zan 3 ) is a large community in southeast China in the Guangdong Province . It is located on a tributary of the Pearl River in southwest Dongguan and belongs to the administrative area of this district-free city. It has an area of 166.7 km².

In the summer of 1839, the imperial special commissioner Lin Zexu , charged with combating the opium trade, had 1.4 million kg of the drug washed into the sea here. The incident became the occasion for the 1st opium war between England and Qing China . On October 8, 1843 , the warring parties in the city signed the Treaty of Humen , which added a most-favored nation clause for England to the more famous Treaty of Nanking . Today the Opium War Museum commemorates this time.
