Humilitas of Vallombrosa

Humilitas von Vallombrosa OSBVall (* around 1226 in Faenza as Rosanna Negusanti ; † May 22, 1310 in Florence ) was an Italian nun and founder of the Vallombrosan Sisters . She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

The young Rosanna, daughter of the nobles Elimonte and Richelda, actually wanted to join an order , but married the patrician Ugolotto Negusanti in 1241 at the age of 15. The couple entered the double monastery of Santa Perpetua in Faenza in 1250 , and Rosanna took the religious name Umiltà ('humility', 'lowliness'; cf. Luke 1.48  VUL : Quia respexit humilitatem ancillæ suæ ). In 1252 it was reclassified to the Vallombrosan monastery of Sant'Apollinare in Faenza, which was founded between 1012 and 1015 by Giovanni Gualberto . She lived there for twelve years. At the request of the Abbot General of the Vallombrosan Plebano, she began building the convent of Santa Maria Novella alla Malta near Faenza around 1266 , where she became abbess . In 1282 she became abbess of the monastery of San Giovanni Evangelista near Florence , which she also founded .

She died in 1310 at the age of 84.

Adoration

On January 27, 1720, the Congregation for Rites confirmed with the consent of Pope Benedict XIII. her long-standing veneration as saints and set her feast day on May 22nd. Pope Pius XII she declared in 1942 co-patroness of the city of Faenza.

Her saint's attribute is a lambskin over the veil .

In 1341 Pietro Lorenzetti painted the altarpiece dedicated to the life and death of St. Dedicated to humilitas. (Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence)
