features

Long and narrow species with a body length of 12–16 mm. The species is unmistakable in Germany.

Occurrence

The distribution is Palearctic , from Europe to Siberia to Japan. In Central Europe it is very common in the mountains and on the plains, there in clearings and railway lines. The fly can also be found as a flower visitor on St. John's herbs , buttercups , common snowball , black elder or rowan . They fly from May to June, as well as in July at higher altitudes.

Way of life

The imagos show a strong territorial behavior and hunt away every larger insect as well as males of their own kind from their close proximity. They usually sit on leaves near the ground, but can also be found a few meters above the ground.

The saprophage larvae are cylindrical in shape and adapted to the way of life in modern wood that was felled at least seven or eight years previously. To shred modern wood, the microorganisms of which serve as food, the larvae, with their pronounced muscles of the mesothorax and metathorax, move forwards and backwards, with which their chitin plates at the front end are set in motion as "friction plates". You usually start to dig circular holes at right angles to the grain at the bottom of a log. The larvae need 2 years for their metamorphosis to the imago.
