Humphrey Stafford, Earl of Stafford

Humphrey Stafford, Earl of Stafford (* around 1424, † around 1459) was an English nobleman .

Life

He was born the eldest son of Humphrey Stafford, 6th Earl of Stafford . His mother was Anne Neville , a sister of Cecily Neville and thus sister-in-law of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York .

Since his father had been raised to Duke of Buckingham in 1444 , Humphrey carried the courtesy title of Earl of Stafford as his Heir Apparent . Since his father survived him, Humphrey did not inherit, but his son Henry in 1460 as 2nd Duke.

Humphrey married Margaret Beaufort (1427-1474) , daughter of Edmund Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset , and Eleanor Beauchamp. His brother Henry married another Margaret Beaufort , cousin of the first.

Like his father, Humphrey was a loyal follower of King Henry VI of Lancaster . in his conflict with the representative of the House of York , Richard Plantagenet. At the outbreak of the Wars of the Roses , Humphrey followed the royal army and fought on May 22, 1455 in the First Battle of St Albans , in which his father-in-law was killed. He himself was seriously injured in the battle.
