Anne Neville, Duchess of Buckingham

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anne Neville, Duchess of Buckingham (* around 1411; † December 20, 1480 ), was the daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland , and his wife Joan Beaufort . She had 23 other siblings and half-siblings, including her younger sister Cecily Neville , later mother of Eduard , George and Richard , and her older brother Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury , later father of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick , the Kingmaker.

In 1424 Anne was married to Humphrey Stafford, 6th Earl of Stafford . After her husband was appointed Duke of Buckingham in 1444 , she carried the courtesy title of Duchess of Buckingham .

Anne experienced a personal tragedy from about 1450 that, in the wake of the growing disputes between the Houses of Lancaster and York, the Neville family was split into two camps. You and you from Thomas of Woodstock , the progenitor of the fifth line of Edward III. , man of descent held to King Henry VI. from the House of Lancaster, while her sister Cecily had married the representative of the second and fourth lineage, Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York , and Salisbury also increasingly allied with him. At the outbreak of the Wars of the Roses in 1455, her eldest son Humphrey fought in the First Battle of St Albans against her brother-in-law York and her nephew Warwick.

In 1459 Anne took over the guarding of her sister Cecily, who had been captured after the Battle of Ludlow , along with her three youngest children Margarete , George and Richard on behalf of the Lancaster side .

Anne's husband was defeated by Warwick at the Battle of Northampton in 1460, Humphrey being killed. The widowed Anne married again in 1467, this time Walter Blount, 1st Lord Mountjoy (1416-1474).

Anne died on September 20, 1480 and was buried in Pleshy , Essex .
