Salla [ ˈsɑlːɑ ] (until 1936 Kuolajärvi ) is a municipality in the Finnish part of Lapland . It is located around 150 km east of the city of Rovaniemi on the border with Russia.
Community structure
In addition to the main town Salla (also Märkäjärvi ), the community includes the settlements Aatsinki, Ahola, Ahvenselkä, Hautajärvi , Hietajärvi, Hirvasvaara, Kallunki, Kelloselkä , Kotala, Koutelo, Kursu, Käsmä, Naruska, Niemelä, Onkamo, Samä, Samä, Saiva, Paliya., , Selkälä, Tuohikylä, Tuutijärvi, Vallovaara, Varvikko and Vittikko.

The Laurila – Kandalakscha railway with a connection to the Murmansk Railway runs through the municipality ; the border crossing is at the Kelloselkä settlement. However, the section from Kemijärvi , where the passenger trains end, has been closed.
As is generally the case in structurally weak Lapland, unemployment is a big problem in Salla: In January 2007 the municipality had the highest unemployment rate of all Finnish municipalities at 25.8%.
history
During the winter war , Salla was overrun on November 30, 1939 by Soviet troops who were supposed to advance from there via Rovaniemi to Tornio on the Baltic Sea. In the Battle of Salla , which lasted until February 28, the Finnish defenders succeeded in stopping the attackers with heavy losses. Nevertheless, after the Peace of Moscow and again after the Continuation War in 1944, Finland had to cede the eastern half of the municipality of Salla with the villages of Kuolajärvi, Tuutijärvi, Vuorijärvi, Korji, Sovajärvi, Sallansuu, Lampela and Kurtin to the Soviet Union . This area is now part of the Russian Murmansk Oblast . Based on old Finland , it is now referred to in Finland as "Old Salla" ( Vanha Salla ).

politics
As in general in the rural areas of Northern Finland, the Center Party is the strongest political force in Salla . In the 2008 local elections it received just under half of the votes, but has an absolute majority in the local council, the highest decision-making body on local matters, with 14 out of 27 seats. The second strongest force is the Left Alliance , which, as in general, is disproportionately strong in Lapland. It received 27.5% of the votes and has seven seats on the local council. The Social Democrats and the National Assembly Party , although belonging to the three major parties nationwide, play a subordinate role in Salla with election results of around twelve percent and three members each on the local council.
