Hon or Houn ( Arabic هون, DMG Hūn ˈhuːn ) is an oasis town in the northern Fezzan region of southwest Libya . The city of Hon is the capital of the municipality of Giofra .
history
After the town of Hon became increasingly dilapidated during the Ottoman rule , the city flourished during the Italian colonial rule . Hon became the administrative seat of the Fezzan region in Italian Libya , called Territorio del Sahara Libico . In the 1930s, the Italian government made some significant improvements in the small town, including the connection to the coast with the new Fezzan Strait. At the 1939 census, the small Libyan-Italian parish of 1,156 people made up 3% of the city's total population of 35,316.
After Libya became independent as the United Kingdom of Libya and later Muammar al-Gaddafi seized power, the Italian community was almost completely driven out. A well-known Libyan Italian who was born in Hon is the internationally renowned painter Mario Schifano (1934–1998).
