The dog hole in Hanover is the remainder of a wall of the former prison in today's Von-Alten-Garten on Lindener Berg .

history

Originally, the small prison facility , which was given its popular name , was located opposite the former administration building and to the left of the path that led from the farmyard of the von Altenschen estate to the park.

The Gutsherrschaft of Linden stood since the Middle Ages, while the lower courts to be the place for its effectiveness among other things that the dog-hole had been built up. Only at the time of the Kingdom of Hanover was the right to exercise lower jurisdiction in Linden abolished in 1854.

The old prison had a new roof at the beginning of the 20th century, but was otherwise largely in its original state at the end of the Weimar Republic .
