Hunter: The Reckoning is an RPG series from the so-called World of Darkness by the US publisher White Wolf . In Germany the game exists under the title Jäger. The retribution and is published by Feder & Schwert publishing house.

General

In this role-playing game, “almost” normal people compete against the forces of night and darkness, which are known from other “world of darkness” games. The Hunter characters form their own subculture, which communicates via secret graffiti-like signs that are invisible to other beings. Some hunters also maintain loose contact with one another via e-mails on the Internet and exchange their knowledge about the supernatural. However, hunters themselves have supernatural powers that they do not fully understand themselves. Likewise, all hunters receive secret messages and visions from the so-called “messengers” or “heralds” who reveal the truth to them. Mainly, they compete against creatures that they refer to as "Walking Dead". The hunters use this to describe a whole range of undead . There are examples that seem to have sprung from cheap zombie films. Others manipulate their environment and its inhabitants so perfidiously that they can only be tracked down through the psychic abilities of the hunter. Where these creatures come from and what goals they pursue remains hidden to most hunters.

The world

The World of Darkness ( Engl. : World of Darkness ) is a world on the brink, in the end-time mood prevails. Geographically and historically, it resembles our own reality. This is how continents exist like America and Europe . The Second World War also took place at the same time. However, supernatural beings in the world of darkness have influenced history since the beginning of time. Vampires pull their strings and manipulate human politics. Werewolves are desperate to defend the last pristine territories on earth. Magicians fight a bitter struggle for reality itself. There are a multitude of other supernatural beings and with them a multitude of worldviews, plans and motives.

However, there are also more obvious differences to our world than the hidden supernatural beings. In this world ignorance, selfishness and cold blood prevail as well as huge filthy and neglected cities. In this world, almost every facet of reality shows its worst side: The police are almost completely corrupt. The Christian Church maintains a renewed and even more fanatical crusade against everything that does not correspond to its doctrine, drugs and violence dominate the everyday life of children and adults alike.

Set of rules

Hunter is based on the “storyteller” system like all other role-playing games in the World of Darkness . At the top of this system is the common task of the player and game master to tell a good story. For this purpose, the players design an individual game figure, called a "character", whose properties and characteristics are noted on a special sheet, the character sheet. All values for physical strength and intelligence, for example, but also skills are recorded here that describe how well a character can drive a car, for example, or how accurately he can shoot with a gun.

The game master, on the other hand, designs both the framework story of events that the characters are supposed to experience and, in turn, characters with which the player characters can and must interact. He also serves as a kind of arbiter in questions of rules or other ambiguities. In this way, the players and the game master create a world that serves as a framework for the story told together.

In order to be able to tell so-called “dramatic situations” realistically, the storyteller system also requires the use of dice. In all games of the World of Darkness , only ten-sided dice (D10 for short) are used. The number of dice and their results are decisive for the outcome of dramatic situations such as a car chase or a shooting.

The "golden rule" - so called by the game makers - says that rules should be deliberately disregarded if they prevent the telling of a good story. It again emphasizes that the story that is being told is more important than the rules that can be read in the books.
