White Wolf Publishing AB is a pen and paper role-playing game and novel publisher based in Sweden . He is best known as the creator of the very successful RPG series World of Darkness . Sword & Sorcery , Black Dog Game Factory and Arthaus were imprints of White Wolf.
history
White Wolf was founded in Georgia in 1991 as a merger of the small RPG publisher Lion Rampant , which was in financial difficulties, and the RPG magazine White Wolf Magazine . The merger should enable the game makers at Lion Rampant to obtain a loan from printing companies in order to be able to finance the production of further copies of their games. The claims were then met with the proceeds from the copies.
White Wolf developed the world of darkness scenario and the storyteller system , which characterizes several of the in-house games, shortly after it was founded . In addition to its role-playing games, the publisher also published novels and trading card games set in the world of darkness . White Wolf used DriveThruRPG as its exclusive distributor. New publications appeared as PDF - Download and possibly as print-on-demand version. Older books, which had long been out of print , were gradually added to the print-on-demand offer.
In 2006 White Wolf merged with CCP Games , a manufacturer of MMORPGs . At the same time it was announced that an MMORPG on the world of darkness was planned. Development on this was stopped in 2014 without it being published.
At GenCon 2012 it was announced that CCP Games is discontinuing the production of pen & paper role-playing games. Onyx Path Publishing , a company founded specifically by the former Creative Director of White Wolf, Richard Thomas, has received a license from CCP Games to produce books on the world of darkness ( classic and new ). The company also acquired all rights to the Trinity , Adventure! and Aberrant and Scion . However, Onyx Path does not have a license to release Mind's Eye Theater . A Mind's Eye Theater license was later granted to By Night Studios .
In October 2015, the rights to the White Wolf brand name and related intellectual property were sold by CCP Games to the Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive . This founded White Wolf as a subsidiary in the form of a Swedish stock corporation. The contracts with the licensees will be retained, but the new company will coordinate the strategic and content-related further development of the products. In addition, White Wolf will publish new novels himself. The sales model last used by White Wolf via the print-on-demand service DriveThruRPG will be retained.
