Huntsville [ ˌhʌntsˌvɪl ] is located north of the Muskoka District Municipality in Ontario , Canada . With around 19,056 inhabitants (as of 2011), it is the largest city in Muskoka.
Huntsville was founded by Captain George Hunt in 1869. The city was named after him. In the “Muskoka Heritage Place”, an open-air museum, a reconstructed pioneer village (Pioneer Village) commemorates this early days. There are also exhibitions there that provide information about the First Nations and original handicrafts, as well as a still functional steam train from 1902.
The city is a tourist center: East of Huntsville is the Algonquin Provincial Park , a 7725 km² nature park. Huntsville itself lies between winding lakes and bushy pine forests typical of the rugged landscape ("Cottage Country"). The "Hidden Valley" ski area was developed for winter tourism.
Highway 60 and Highway 11 intersect near Huntsville.
The Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville hosted the 36th G8 Summit from June 25-27, 2010 .
