Dara Howell (born August 23, 1994 in Huntsville , Ontario ) is a Canadian freestyle skier . She has been the first female Olympic champion in ski slopestyle since February 11, 2014 .

biography

Howell was born in Huntsville , Ontario . She attended Huntsville High School in her hometown for four years before starting distance learning at Tawingo College in the fall of 2012 .

Athletic career

Howell has been part of the Muskoka Ski Club on the Hidden Valley Highlands in Huntsville, Ontario since winter 2010 . Previously, she was part of the cross-country skiing team at Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club at Shaw Lake , Muskoka .

She made her slopestyle debut for the Muskoka Ski Club at the national championships in March 2011 at the US Stratton Mountain Ski Resort in Vermont . Nine months later in December 2011, she also made her World Cup debut at Copper Mountain in Summit County , Colorado . The first success followed, in which she won the silver medal at the X-Games in Tignes, France in March 2012. Howell won the bronze medal at the X-Games in January 2013 in Aspen , Colorado and in March 2013 in Tignes, France. She won the silver medal at the 2013 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Voss , Norway . She finished 2013 with 30th place in the overall ranking.

At the age of 19, she took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi in February 2014 , where she won the gold medal in the women's ski slopestyle competition . She dedicated the Olympic victory to her compatriot Sarah Burke , who died in 2012 . Her victory was overshadowed by the severe fall of her compatriot and native Japanese Yuki Tsubota , who broke her jaw .
