Huong Thanh ( Vietnamese:. Hương Thanh, literally Lotus fragrance , born in Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City ) is a Vietnamese singer in France living. She interprets traditional Vietnamese music and (hát) Cải lương , a South Vietnamese form of musical theater , but also world music and jazz .

biography

Huong Thanh grew up in a South Vietnamese family of musicians, her father Hữu Phước (d. 1997) was a master of Cải lương singing. From the age of ten she was trained in the family in Cải Lương and in traditional singing. From the age of 14 she studied at various schools for music and theater and made her stage debut at the age of 16. In 1977 she emigrated to Paris as a result of the political events in Vietnam . There she met the Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê in 1995 , through whom she had first contact with jazz and world music. In 1996 she sang at UNESCO's invitation to celebrate the anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. In 1997 she made recordings with her sister Hương Lan in Los Angeles , USA.

In the following years she worked alongside Nguyên Lê with Michel Alibo , Paolo Fresu , Paul McCandless and Dhafer Youssef, among others . The CD Fragile Beauty , recorded in a duo with Nguyên Lê in 2007 , occupied one of the top positions in the World Music Charts Europe in spring 2008 (April 2nd, May 4th). In 2007 she received the Prix ​​Musique des Musiques du Monde for her interpretation of the traditional music of Vietnam. This award is associated with studio recordings and in 2008 the CD Viet-Nam: Musique Du Théâtre Cai Luong was released . Here Huong Thanh interprets some of the most popular pieces of the Cải lương and traditional music of the three regions of Vietnam in collaboration with traditional musicians . With this repertoire she tours with her Huong Thanh Trio .
