Hussein Dey in 1830.

Hussein III. Dey , also Hussein Pascha (* around 1773 in Smyrna , † 1838 in Alexandria ) was the last Dey of Algeria .

Hussein joined the janissary garrison there in Algiers and was elected Dey in 1818 and recognized by the Sultan as Beylerbeyi des Eyalet Algeria (Cezayir-i Garp). Annoyed by France's unpaid debts and the arrogant attitude of the French consul Pierre Deval , he hit him on April 29, 1827 with his fly whisk . This incident was used three years later as a pretext for the French occupation of Algeria . Hussein Dey was stripped of his rule on July 5, 1830 when French troops took Algiers . Hussein Dey accepted the French offer to go into exile and ended the three hundred year rule of the Ottoman Empire in Algeria.
