The Hvammsfjörður (Eng. Muldenfjord ) is a fjord in the west of Iceland .
It is a side fjord of Breiðafjörður and is separated from it by a number of small islands. The L-shaped or boot-shaped fjord is about 40 km long and about 9 km wide. The north bank forms the Klofningsnes peninsula with its point Klofningur, the south bank the Snæfellsnes peninsula . The largest town on the fjord is Búðardalur . It is located on the east bank and is the main town of Dalabyggð , in which Hvammsfjörður is located.
The Laxdæla saga , the saga of the people in Laxárdalur, refers to the valley of the Laxá í Dölum, which flows into the fjord south of Búðardalur.
The Klofningsvegur runs around the northern peninsula, Vestfjarðavegur
to the east and Snæfellsnesvegur to the south
