Hwang Kyo-ahn (born April 15, 1957 in Seoul ) is a South Korean politician . Hwang, who did not belong to any party at the time, was the 44th Prime Minister of South Korea from June 18, 2015 to May 11, 2017  .

After studying law at Sungkyunkwan University , he worked as a prosecutor from 1981 to 1995 . From 1995 to 2011 he was the attorney general of South Korea.

He then took on a management position in the national election commission until 2012. After Park Geun-hye was elected President, she appointed him Minister of Justice on March 11, 2013. He held this office until June 13, 2015. On May 21, Park Geun-hye named him to succeed Prime Minister Lee Wan-koo . After confirmation by the South Korean National Assembly , he was sworn in on June 16, 2015 and took over the official duties that Lee Wan-koo Choi Kyoung-hwan had taken on as managing director since the resignation of Lee Wan-koos Choi Kyoung-hwan .

Hwang has been president of the country since December 9, 2016, when the then incumbent President Park was suspended from all her duties by the National Assembly as a result of a corruption scandal. On March 10, 2017, Park was removed from office by the Constitutional Court. Hwang managed the official business on an interim basis until May 10, 2017. On May 10, 2017, the newly elected President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in , took office.

In November 2018, Hwang joined the Liberty Korea Party . He announced in January 2019 that he would seek to lead the party. Hwang won the internal party vote to elect the new party leader with 50.1% of the vote on February 27, 2019. Hwang also headed the Mirae-tonghap party , which was later founded . After the electoral defeat of those in the parliamentary elections in South Korea in 2020 , he announced his resignation as party chairman.
