Munjong ( Korean : 문종 ) (born November 15, 1414 in Gyeongbokgung Palace, Hanseong , Joseon ; † June 1, 1452 ibid), was the 5th king of the Joseon Dynasty ( 조선 왕조 ) during his reign from 1450 to 1452 ( 1392–1910) in Korea and son of King Sejong 세종 .

Life

Munjong was the eldest son of King Sejong . Appointed Crown Prince by his father in 1421, he became known in the country under the name Hyang ( ). He is described as someone who had great knowledge and who actively supported his father King Sejong in his government business as Crown Prince.

Reign

Due to the poor health of his father King Sejong , Munjong had already partially taken over the business of government in the last few years before his death. When his father died on April 8, 1450, he seamlessly took over power. But his tenure was short-lived. Not even in the best of health, Munjong died after only two years and three months of reign and left power to his son Prince Nosan ( 노산 ) as King Danjong ( 단종 ) at the tender age of 11.

King Munjong was buried together with his wife Queen Hyeondeok ( 현덕 ) in the royal tomb Hyeolleung ( 현릉 ), in the city of Guri ( 구리 ) in the province of Gyeonggi-do ( 경기도 ).
