The company was founded in Aalborg in 1959 by Kjeld Werner Jensen . In the same year sales of the Fantomet (German Phantom ), a hydraulic excavator for tractors, started. Due to the great sales success, the company expanded and moved to its current headquarters in Støvring in 1962.

In 1963 the Fantomet was replaced by new developments (including model C ). The experience gained in building the backhoe excavator resulted in the production of a simple backhoe loader based on a Volvo tractor in 1968. Ford tractors were also used later. A special feature was the swivel angle of 270 °.

An important development step for Hydrema was the complete in-house development of a backhoe loader in 1980. This type 807 had all-wheel drive, articulated steering and four wheels of the same size. In addition, the tail boom could swivel by 200 ° (previously only swivel angles of up to 180 ° were common for backhoe loaders). This means that Hydrema was superior to the competition at the time and also gained international fame.

In 1983, Hydrema developed the MBC 800 largely from the same components. It was a small articulated dump truck with a payload of 10 tons.

In 1996 Hydrema bought Weimar Werk Baumaschinen GmbH and then manufactured mobile and crawler excavators as well as small wheel loaders there .

In 2000, the founder's son, Jan Werner Jensen, took over management of the company.
