Hygroryza aristata ,also known as floating rice or floating grass in aquaristics , is a perennial aquatic plant and the only species of the genus Hygroryza inthe sweet grass family (Poaceae). In Chinese it is also called shui he . From a botanical point of view, the plant is not a type of rice per se, all of which belong to the genus Oryza .

description

Hygroyza aristata is a tropical grass species that floats freely on the surface of the water and can form dense turf . The flooding rungs are 50–150 centimeters long. The leaf blades are 3–7 inches long and 0.5–2.5 inches wide. They are rounded or heart-shaped at the bottom and suddenly narrowed into a 1 millimeter long petiole-like base at the transition to the leaf sheath. The ligula is truncated and 0.5–0.8 millimeters long. The inflorescence is triangular in outline, the branches are short. The lowest branches are almost whorled and later turned back. The spikelets are green, their awn is 1–1.4 centimeters long. The lemmas are 7.5–8 millimeters long, hairy on the back and ciliate on the nerves. The palea are keeled and ciliate on the midrib. The anthers are about 3.5 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

distribution

The natural range of Hygroryza aristata is in Southeast Asia : Fujian , Guangdong , Hainan, Taiwan, Yunnan , Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.

use

Because of the delicate, only a few centimeters long, leaf blades and the inflated leaf sheaths, swimming rice is used in open aquariums. The numerous, fine adventitious roots that form at the nodes are good hiding places for young fish. Because of the rapid growth of the stolons , the species is only suitable for larger bodies of water. The demands on light and water temperature are high (22–28 ° C), but the swimming rice can still be cultivated in garden ponds in warmer locations in Central Europe during the summer. Propagation takes place by dividing the rooted shoots.
