Hylocereus trigonus is a species of plant in the genus Hylocereus fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet trigonus comes from the Greek , means 'triangular' and refers to the shape of the shoots.

description

Hylocereus trigonus grows liana-like, climbing and spreading and reaches a length of up to 10 meters. The green, slender, triangular shoots are strongly wavy on the back of the ribs and not horny. From the areoles located on the upper tip of the curved notches arise from 1 to 14 stiff and differently shaped spines . They are 4 to 7 millimeters long and turn brownish over time. Sometimes the areoles are still covered with a few bristles.

The white flowers are 14 to 25 inches long. The scales on the pericarpel do not overlap. The elongated, red fruits are 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter and up to 10 centimeters long. The fruits are covered with fleshy scales.

Distribution and systematics

Hylocereus trigonus is common in Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles at altitudes between 100 and 450 meters. The first description as Cereus trigonus was published in 1812 by Adrian Hardy Haworth . William Edwin Safford placed them in the genus Hylocereus in 1909 .
