Hynish Harbor is a seaport in the southeast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Tiree . In 1971 the port was initially classified in category B in the Scottish monument lists. Due to its good state of preservation and the uniqueness of the facilities in Scotland, it was accepted into the highest category A in 1989.

history

The port facilities were built in connection with the construction of the Skerryvore lighthouse on the rocky island of Skerryvore , around 20 km to the south . Due to the small size of Skerryvore, only small amounts of building material could be stored there, which is why a nearby port was needed to provide it. This was set up when construction began between 1837 and 1840. Alan Stevenson , who also planned the lighthouse, was responsible as the architect . Before the lighthouse was automated, Hynish Harbor was needed for its operation and maintenance. In the late 1980s, the unused port came into the possession of an organization for the protection of monuments and culture in the Hebrides ; later the remote workers' houses and the signal tower were also bought. The facility was restored. A lighthouse museum was set up in the signal tower and some houses were converted into rental apartments. Ships also departed from Hynish in the 1840s and 1850s bringing emigrants to Canada in consideration of Highland Clearances and potato blight . Today the port is still used for fishing boats.

description

The structures consist of coarse, hewn stones and end with either flat or slate-covered hip or gable roofs . A hand-operated loading crane was once installed at the jetty, which protrudes around 70 m in a north-easterly direction into the Atlantic Ocean . Not far from the harbor basin is a reservoir, the water of which can be channeled into the harbor basin via a short drain to flush out sand deposits and avoid silting up. The workers' houses are built on two floors and end with gable roofs. The highest located former building of the lighthouse keeper is striking. It is an elongated, one-story building with a flat roof, which is divided into several residential units. The dull, round signal tower, which was required for communication with the lighthouse keepers on Skerryvore by light signal, rises up near it. Various warehouses also belong to the facility.
