Hyphen (born January 22, 1984 in Chur ; real name Claudio Candinas ) is a rapper from the canton of Graubünden .

biography

Hyphen, a member of the Grisons hip-hop group Breitbild , began writing standard and Swiss German rap lyrics in 1998. Together with friends he founded his first rap group "Tabulose", from which Breitbild was to emerge shortly before the turn of the millennium. From then on, the focus was on Swiss-German texts, which mainly described the everyday life of teenagers. In 2000, the Grisons rapper Gimma became aware of Hyphen and invited him to record a record together with Gimma's band "Oschtblock Kuabuaba". The result of this collaboration was the EP “Pump dä Scheiss uf” (Slash Records, 2001), on which Hyphen made his recording debut. This was followed by several appearances with the Oschtblock Kuabuaba and as a back-up MC for Gimma. In 2002 Hyphen and his band Breitbild released their first EP , “Statischt”, which was released on vinyl and as a CD and distributed by the band itself in Switzerland. The respectable success prompted the young band to release their first album, «Narra Freiheit», in 2004. After another album in 2006 (Legenda), Hyphen devoted himself more to his passion for freestyle rap - the improvised art of rhyming. This motivated the Chur rapper to take part in several battles (including the Ultimate MC Battle in Bern). In 2006 Hyphen withdrew from this genre and concentrated again more on his band and on recordings of various national and international rap acts such as Section Kuchikäschtli , c.mEE , Pacewon, LIV, Krust von PVP, Diens von Wurzel5, Sam Oibel, Milchmaa , Lou Geniuz, and many more. In addition to the widescreen albums “As isch nid immer alles crazy” (2008) and “Was für a Moment” (2010), various compilations and albums with guest contributions by Hyphen were released. In addition, from 2006 onwards, the Chur-based resident joined the «Freestyle Convention» collective, a group of freestyle rappers who present improvised rhymes in the form of games at concert length. In 2010, Hyphen and his band colleague Andri presented the weekly program “Everything but Hip Hop” on the Swiss radio station SRF Virus . With his various projects, Hyphen played over 300 concerts in Switzerland, Germany and Austria and played at the Splash Festival in Chemnitz (2006), the Montreux Jazz Festival (2010) and several times at the Openair Frauenfeld . Hyphen is also increasingly active as a DJ and leads rap workshops at Swiss schools.

successes

In 2005, Hyphen and his band Breitbild won the city of Chur's cultural promotion award as well as the young talent award from the Eliette von Karajan cultural fund. In 2006 the video clip for “For 1 hets always no glangt” (album Legenda) was the most played music video in Switzerland. In 2006 Hyphen won the “Best Rap Combo” and “Best Video” awards (For 1 hets immer no glangt) with Breitbild on Slang Night. In 2008, the award for “Best Album” followed (As isch nid immer alles crazy). The video clip for the song “Nacht” received the jury award of the Solothurn Film Festival in 2009 and the Edi.09 in the “Television / Music Clips” category.
