features

Macroscopic features

Hyphoderma occidentale has resupinate, membranous-waxy fruiting bodies typical of the genus Hyphoderma . They are grayish in color and extremely thin. Your hymenium is smooth under the naked eye (but can show pores under the magnifying glass), the edge is not clearly contoured.

Microscopic features

As with all Hyphoderma species, the hyphae structure of Hyphoderma occidentale is monomitic, i.e. it only has generative hyphae . The 3–4  µm wide hyphae are hyaline , thin-walled and strongly interwoven, they have a thin subiculum. The septa always have buckles . The cystids are cylindrical and slightly curved. They are not encrusted and are around 50–80 × 6–8 µm in size, which means they protrude slightly from the fruit layer. The basidia of the species are club-shaped to approximately urn-shaped, waisted in the middle, have four sterigmata and measure 30–40 × 6–8 µm. They have a buckle at the base . Their spores are sub-cylindrical to almost sausage-shaped, hyaline and thin-walled. They measure 12-14 × 4.5-5 µm and are slightly curved.

distribution

The known distribution of the species covers large parts of northern Europe from Great Britain to the Caucasus .

ecology

Hyphoderma occidentale grows on the wood of flowering seeds , in the southern part of the area especially on typical maquis species such as holm oak ( Quercus ilex ), mastic bush ( Pistacia lentiscus ) or rockrose ( Cistus spp.)
