from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hypogeum of Sant'Iroxi (also known as La Tomba dei guerrieri ( tomb of the warriors )) is an archaeological site in the former village and today's district of Sant'Iroxi (San Giorgio hill) on the eastern outskirts of Decimoputzu , in the province South Sardinia in Sardinia .

History and description

The hypogeum , a Domus de Janas , was discovered by chance in 1987 while building a public gym north of the stadium, near Piazza San Giorgo on the eastern edge of the modern town of Decimaputzu. It originated around 3000 BC. BC, during the late Neolithic , and was in use for about 1500 years. A nearby, associated settlement was also inhabited for one and a half millennia, from the time of the Ozieri culture to the late phase of the Bonnanaro culture , was then abandoned and only repopulated in Roman times. It has been continuously inhabited since then and has now merged with the small town of Decimaputzo.

The hypogeum got its name "Tomba dei guerrieri" because of its high number of skeletal remains (more than 200), all buried in a stool position , in 13 chronologically separated strata , and because of the rich grave goods of weapons - these date from approx. 1650–1600 BC . BC - consisting of swords and daggers made of arsenic bronze (19 in total), which came to light during the excavations in the hypogeum. The swords have triangular blades in cross section, the lengths of which vary between 27 and 66 cm. They show some parallels to swords from the El Argar culture of Spain. The finds from the hypogeum are kept in the National Archaeological Museum in Cagliari .
