The Red brown coal Berry ( Hypoxylon fuscum ) is a fungal art from the family of the wooden club relatives (Xylariaceae). It is widespread in Europe.
features
The fruiting bodies (stroma) reach a diameter of three to five millimeters and a height between one and three millimeters. They are irregularly hemispherical to flat, cushion-shaped or indented. They have grown broadly on the substrate. The surface is rough to bumpy due to the perithecia . It is initially purple-brown, later brown-black. The inside (endostoma) is tinted dark purple-black to black.
The spores measure 12 to 15 by 5 to 7 microns. They are smooth and flattened on one side.
Species delimitation
Hypoxylon porphyreum is particularly similar macroscopically and microscopically . It is boreally distributed and restricted to oaks ( Quercus ). In addition, their spores are only 4 to 5 micrometers wide.

Red-brown coal berries can be found all year round on dead, barked or debarked branches and trunks of various hardwoods, especially hazel ( Corylus avellana ) and alder ( Alnus ). She often appears in small or large groups.
