history

In 1979 Rodgers and Edwards wrote the song. I'm Coming Out was originally planned as a duet with Aretha Franklin , but later it was decided to let Diana Ross sing the song alone. The duo was inspired to the song idea by some drag queens they saw on the way to the recording studio.

The trombone solo comes from Meco . Rodgers asked him, being his neighbor, if he wanted to play the solo in the song, and he agreed.

The publication took place on August 22, 1980.
