The " IBM PC Convertible " or IBM 5140 was a portable computer with an integrated 640 × 200 pixel LCD screen. IBM presented it in 1986 and replaced the portable 15 kg computer " IBM PC Portable " in their model range . It could be operated as a full-fledged IBM PC-compatible computer with batteries. In contrast to the very expensive portable, it had no hard drive, but two 720 kB 3.5 "floppy disk drives. In the Toshiba T1000 that followed in 1987, MS-DOS 2.11 was loaded from a 256 kB ROM ( read-only memory ).

The processor of the IBM PC Convertible, an 8088 , which has been sold by Intel since 1978, was used in an energy-saving CMOS variant and ran at a clock frequency of 4.77 MHz . The main memory was 256 kB in size and expandable to 640 kB. The calculator weighed 5.8 kg and had a built-in handle.

Richard Sapper played a key role in the design of the device .
