The IBM Portable Personal Computer was an IBM PC XT in a beige, portable housing with an integrated, graphics-capable 9-inch screen ( cathode ray tube ) in an amber-colored, monochrome version. The keyboard formed the bottom of the case and also served to protect the screen and floppy disk drive on the front of the PC. To work, it could either only be clipped out at the top or completely, and was connected to the front of the housing using a spiral cable with an RJ plug . To fold the keyboard, the cable had to be stowed in a slot provided in the upper part.

The portable weighed approx. 15 kg and was delivered in a blue canvas carrying bag for an additional charge. With a shockproof 10 MB hard disk and 256 kB main memory - an upgrade to 640 kB was possible for an additional charge - around 20,000  DM were to be paid ( approx. 19,700 euros based on today's purchasing power ). A 5 1 / 4 -inch diskette drive (floppy disk) belonged to the standard. He was in February 1984, the first portable IBM PC in the class of portables after Compaq a year before its IBM-compatible had successfully launched portable on the market.

Several slots could be equipped with expansions, some of them only with a short design.

As a special convenience there was an approximately 1 cm high slot for 5 14- inch diskettes above the floppy disk drive. The first portable computer ( Osborne 1 ) offered such a feature .

The portable had a power supply unit that could be operated either with 110 or 230 volts , 50/60 Hz . It thus offered good conditions for mobile, international use. Battery operation was still unthinkable due to the electricity demand. After a period of operation, the case became more than lukewarm. Still, the PC was reliable for the time.
