history

The company was founded in 1914 by Hermann Hahn, who began producing automatic turret lathes in the same year. More than 20,000 automatic lathes have been sold within four decades.

In 1975 the company started producing multi-spindle automatic lathes. A few years later, the company entered CNC technology . After the death of Eugen Hahn, the son of the company founder, 85% of the company shares were transferred to a foundation . In 1992, Index introduced a new generation of turn-mill centers based on a modular system. In 1997, Traub lathe GmbH & Co. KG from neighboring Reichenbach an der Fils was taken over and integrated into the Index Group as an independent subsidiary . In 2014 the Index-Werke celebrated their 100th anniversary. To this day, the company has followed a two-brand strategy. In November 2015, both companies were merged through the growth of TRAUB lathe GmbH & Co. KG to INDEX-Werke GmbH & Co. KG.

History TRAUB

The company was founded in 1938 by Hermann Traub in Oberesslingen and just two years later it was producing the 500th automatic lathe. In 1942 the Traub lathes moved to Reichenbach an der Fils . In 1977 the company form was officially changed from Traub to Traub Drehmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG. In 1993, Traub took over the re-privatized Heckert Chemnitzer Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH , but was unable to compensate for his financial difficulties. In early 1997 the company had to file for bankruptcy. The lathe division with 450 employees was taken over by Index-Werke in the same year and integrated into the Index group as an independent subsidiary. To this day, INDEX-Werke pursues a two-brand strategy.
